Eye of Horus Free Spins

See how the bonus begins, how Horus upgrades the reels, and why extra spins become more interesting as the feature develops.

3+ Eye of Horus scatters Horus Wild takes over Upgrades persist all round

Normal base-game reels. No scatters yet.

Three Eye of Horus scatters land across the grid.

The base-game spin ends and the free spins feature begins.

Illustrative 5×3 layout. Exact trigger and starting spin count depend on the version.

How It Triggers

Scatters Start the Round

The Eye of Horus symbol is the scatter. It sits outside the regular symbol-upgrade ladder. It triggers the feature, it does not get upgraded inside it.

Land three or more anywhere on the five reels. They do not need to sit on a payline, and the free spins round begins.

3 scatters · trigger 4 scatters · check your version 5 scatters · check your version

Three scatters is the general, widely-described trigger. Some releases award more starting spins for four or five scatters instead of a flat amount; others do not. That detail is not the same across every Eye of Horus release.

Exact trigger requirements and starting spin count depend on the version you are playing. Check the game’s information screen rather than assuming a number.

The Upgrade Ladder

How Symbols Upgrade During the Round

This is the mechanic that makes the later part of a free spins round feel different from the first spin.

Each upgrade removes the weakest symbol still active on the reels and promotes the tier above it in its place. The first upgrade affects the lowest tier; the next upgrade affects whatever is now lowest; and so on.

Because classic versions keep those upgrades active for the rest of the round, a free spin played late in the feature can be working with a noticeably stronger symbol set than the spin that triggered it.

Use the control below to see what the ladder looks like at three different points in a round.

The symbol upgrade ladder

Tier 1 10 · J · Q Lowest
Tier 2 K · A Royals
Tier 3 Lotus Low
Tier 4 Ankh Mid
Tier 5 Scarab Mid
Tier 6 Anubis High
Tier 7 Pharaoh’s Mask High
Tier 8 Horus Falcon Top regular

All eight tiers are still on the reels.

The Eye of Horus scatter sits outside this ladder. Order follows this site’s paytable, lowest to highest, confirm the hierarchy in your own version.

Before & After

What the Reels Can Look Like Later in the Round

The upgrade ladder is not just a diagram. It changes what the reel grid itself can contain. Here is an illustrative snapshot of the same grid early in a round and again after three upgrades.

Timing

Early Upgrades Feel Different From Late Ones

An upgrade on spin 1 means nearly the entire bonus is played with the improved symbol set. The same upgrade on the second-to-last spin has far less time to matter.

That is why early upgrades often feel more significant, not because they pay more, but because they give the feature more remaining spins to use the improved reels.

Upgrade on spin 1

11 spins left

Almost the whole round plays with the improved set.

Upgrade on spin 11

Little time left for the upgrade to matter.

Inside the Bonus Round

The Horus Wild Becomes More Central

Horus is already the key Wild in the base game. Inside free spins he matters even more: when he lands, he can expand across a reel and complete several paylines at once, and his appearances can also be tied to the upgrade system and to extra spins, depending on the version.

A Horus Wild near the start of the feature is especially interesting, many spins remain to benefit from whatever happens next. A Horus Wild on the final spin can still create a strong payout, but there is less time left for any upgrade to affect future spins.

One reel, three stages

Reel 1 and reel 3 hold a matching Ankh. Reel 2 holds a King, so the line does not connect.

Horus lands on reel 2.

Reel 2 becomes a full Wild reel, and the line connects across all three reels.

Extra Spins

Extra Spins Compound With Upgrades

Some versions of Eye of Horus award extra free spins when Horus Wilds appear during the feature. The principle is simple even where the exact numbers vary: more Horus Wilds on a spin can mean more spins added to the round.

Timing is what makes this matter. An extra spin added early plays with whatever symbol set is still on the reels at that point. An extra spin added after several upgrades plays with a stronger set. It is not tacked onto the original reel state, it is played after the upgrades already happened.

That is why Horus Wild, symbol upgrade and extra spin work better together than any one of them does alone. None of this is a reason to expect a bigger win on any particular spin; the result stays random.

Progression

How a Bonus Can Build Over Time

Ordinary symbols. Horus arrives. One tier disappears. Another upgrade follows. Lower symbols vanish, stronger symbols become common, and maybe extra spins appear. The bonus can feel completely different from the one that started several spins earlier. That gradual change is the whole point of the feature.

Variance

The Same Trigger Can Lead Anywhere

Three scatters only open the feature; they do not tell you what it will pay. Two illustrative rounds below start from the same trigger and finish very differently. That gap is the volatility of the bonus at work, not a flaw in either round.

During the Round

What to Watch: and What Not To

A few things describe where the feature actually stands. A few others are just the kind of pattern a mind looks for when nothing meaningful is happening.

Worth watching

Spins remaining

Upgrades already achieved

How many low symbols remain

Whether Horus has added extra spins

Not worth watching

“Horus hasn’t appeared for five spins”

“The scatter nearly landed”

“The last three spins were poor”

“The feature is almost over, a big win must come”

Why the difference matters

The left-hand list describes the feature’s current state. It tells you where you are. The right-hand list describes a feeling, not a mechanic. None of those phrases create an obligation for the next spin.

Use the left list to understand the round you are in. Ignore the right list entirely. It does not predict anything.

The Maths Behind It

The Bonus Is Already Part of the RTP

The free spins round is not an extra prize sitting on top of the game’s return. It is one ingredient inside it.

Base-game losing spins, feature losing spins, symbol upgrades, extra spins and the occasional large win are all part of the same calculation. Triggering the bonus does not move you outside the house edge; greater winning potential during the feature is not the same thing as an advantage.

Published RTP also genuinely differs between releases of Eye of Horus, so there is no single figure that applies to every version. Check the information screen of the game you are actually playing.

What the RTP is built from

Base game spins Free spins feature Symbol upgrades Occasional large wins The far more common losing spins Total game RTP

Conceptual, not a formula and not a real figure. The free spins feature is already included in the mathematical return, see the RTP guide for why no single number applies to every release.

Why the published RTP varies

A Reframe

Free Spins Are Not Really Free Money

You are not placing an extra wager per free spin, but the feature was funded by the mathematics of the paid spins that triggered it. Part of the game’s theoretical return is concentrated inside the bonus.

Rather than “the game just gave me spins for nothing,” it helps to think “I have reached the bonus portion of the same game.”

Do Not Chase It

A Quiet Run Does Not Mean the Bonus Is Close

Sixty spins without a free spins trigger. Then twenty more. Nothing. It starts to feel like the bonus must be close.

It is not.

The game does not owe you the feature because you have gone a long time without seeing it. Two scatters on the last spin, one short of a trigger, does not make the next spin more likely to succeed either.

If €0.50 fits your budget, keep it there because it fits your budget, not because:

“The bonus has to come soon.”

That is one of the quickest ways to turn a normal session into an expensive one.

What Happens When the Feature Ends

Once the final free spin is played, the game returns to the base game. In classic-style versions, symbol upgrades reset with the round. They belong to that particular feature and do not normally carry into ordinary paid spins. A new bonus, if and when it triggers again, starts from its own initial configuration.
