Ten Tips to Master Eye of Horus

Learn the paylines, expanding Horus Wild, free spins and symbol upgrades, plus the simple bankroll rules that make the game easier to understand.

5 reels · 10 paylines Expanding Horus Wild Symbol upgrades

One Horus Wild covering reel 3 can sit on several paylines at the same time. Illustrative layout.

Eye of Horus is not difficult to play.

Set the stake, spin the reels and let the game do the rest. That does not mean there is nothing worth learning.

The original-style Eye of Horus game uses five reels and 10 paylines. Its best-known features are the expanding Horus Wild and the free spins round, where symbols can be upgraded as the feature progresses. Different releases of Eye of Horus exist, so the exact RTP, bet range and even some feature details can vary between versions.

There is also one important difference between Eye of Horus and a strategy game such as Let It Ride. You cannot make a clever decision that changes which symbols land next. The reels are random.

So playing Eye of Horus well is mostly about understanding what the game is doing, knowing where the important features are, choosing a sensible stake, and not making expensive decisions because you think the next spin must be better.

These ten tips cover the parts that actually matter.

Learn the Paylines Before You Start

Eye of Horus looks simple enough. Five reels, three rows, a collection of Egyptian symbols, spin. But you should still know how the winning lines work before putting money into the game.

The classic layout uses 10 paylines, with wins normally formed by matching symbols from the leftmost reel across consecutive reels. That means three matching symbols scattered randomly across the screen do not necessarily produce a win. They need to fall in the correct positions.

Suppose you see three matching Egyptian symbols. One is on reel 1, one is on reel 3, one is on reel 5. That may look impressive. It does not mean you have a three-symbol line win. The paylines decide.

This becomes particularly important when Horus expands over an entire reel, because suddenly several paylines may pass through the same Wild reel.

Spend a minute looking at the payline display before playing. You should know what the game is paying you for, not just whether the screen looks busy.

Paylines, one at a time

Line 1 · straight through the centre

Every line, written out. Reels run left to right:

  1. Line 1 middle, middle, middle, middle, middle
  2. Line 2 top, top, top, top, top
  3. Line 3 bottom, bottom, bottom, bottom, bottom
  4. Line 4 top, middle, bottom, middle, top
  5. Line 5 bottom, middle, top, middle, bottom
  6. Line 6 top, top, middle, bottom, bottom
  7. Line 7 bottom, bottom, middle, top, top
  8. Line 8 middle, top, top, top, middle
  9. Line 9 middle, bottom, bottom, bottom, middle
  10. Line 10 top, middle, middle, middle, top

Matching symbols only pay when they follow an active winning line. Line paths follow the common 10-line layout for this reel set. Always confirm them against the paytable inside the version you are playing.

Choose the Stake Before the Reels Start Moving

One of the easiest mistakes in any slot is constantly changing the bet because of what just happened.

Lose five spins. Increase the stake. Hit a decent win. Increase it again. Miss the bonus several times. Double the bet because it feels close.

None of those things changes the probability of what the next spin will produce.

Choose a betting amount that fits the amount you are prepared to spend, then stay reasonably consistent.

Suppose you have a playing budget of €50. At €0.50 per spin, that represents 100 spins before accounting for wins. At €2 per spin, the same starting amount represents only 25 spins.

The second player has not found a stronger way to play Eye of Horus. He has simply increased how quickly the bankroll can move. And because slots can produce long stretches without a substantial win, that difference matters.

The game should determine the result. The last losing spin should not determine the size of your next wager.

Understand What the Horus Wild Actually Does

The Horus Wild is the symbol you really need to understand.

In versions based on the classic game, Horus can appear on the middle reels and expand to cover the whole reel. It substitutes for ordinary paying symbols, while the Scatter remains separate.

That expanding reel can transform an ordinary-looking screen. Suppose you have matching symbols on reels 1 and 3. Normally, the symbol on reel 2 would need to connect them. If Horus lands there and expands across the reel, it can act as the missing connection.

That is why one Horus symbol can sometimes create several line wins at once. It is not simply another Wild occupying one position. It can turn an entire reel into Wild positions.

That is one of the main reasons Eye of Horus still feels different from a basic five-reel slot.

When you see the Wild expand, watch the paylines rather than only looking at the final win amount. You will understand the game much faster.

One reel, three stages

Reel 1 and reel 3 hold a matching Ankh. Reel 2 holds a King, so the line does not connect.

Horus lands on reel 2.

Reel 2 becomes a full Wild reel, and the line connects across all three reels.

Illustrative three-reel close-up. In the full game the Wild appears on the middle reels of the 5×3 grid.

Know Why the Free Spins Round Matters

The free spins feature is the main event in Eye of Horus.

In the classic versions, three or more Scatter symbols trigger the bonus round. Some widely available versions award 12 free spins, while other releases use different starting amounts depending on the number of Scatters.

The important part is not simply getting spins without paying another cash stake. It is what happens during them.

  • The Horus Wild becomes more important.
  • Symbols can be upgraded.
  • Additional spins may be awarded.
  • The structure of the reels can become more favourable as lower-paying symbols are removed or promoted.

That is what gives the bonus round its character.

Do not think of it as:

“12 ordinary spins for free.”

It is a separate version of the game with additional mechanics working in the background. Understanding those mechanics makes the round much more interesting.

How the free spins work

Watch the Symbol Upgrades

This is probably the single most important feature to understand once the free spins begin.

During the feature, Horus Wilds can cause lower-value symbols to upgrade into higher-value ones. Those upgrades continue through the bonus round rather than disappearing after the individual spin.

That means the first free spin and the tenth free spin may not effectively be playing with the same symbol mix.

Suppose the lowest symbol is upgraded. It disappears from the active hierarchy and becomes the next symbol above it. Later another upgrade occurs. Now another low symbol moves up.

Keep getting upgrades and increasingly more of the ordinary reel positions can contain stronger symbols.

That is why a bonus round can become more interesting as it develops. You are not simply waiting for one enormous spin. You are watching the symbol ladder change.

A player who does not understand this may see an upgrade animation and think it is only decoration. It is not. It affects the remaining free spins.

The symbol upgrade ladder

Tier 1 10 · J · Q Lowest
Tier 2 K · A Royals
Tier 3 Lotus Low
Tier 4 Ankh Mid
Tier 5 Scarab Mid
Tier 6 Anubis High
Tier 7 Pharaoh’s Mask High
Tier 8 Horus Falcon Top regular

All eight tiers are still on the reels.

Each upgrade takes the lowest remaining tier off the reels and promotes it. Upgrades remain active for the rest of that free spins round in classic versions. Ladder order follows this site’s paytable; confirm the hierarchy in your own version.

Extra Spins Matter More After Upgrades

Some versions of Eye of Horus award extra free spins when Horus Wilds appear during the feature. One Horus may add one spin. Two may add three. Three may add five. The exact rules should always be checked in the version you are playing.

An extra spin near the beginning of the feature is useful. An extra spin after several symbol upgrades can be even more interesting.

Why?

Because you now get another chance to spin using the upgraded symbol set.

Suppose the bonus begins with 12 spins. During the first few spins, two lower-value symbols are upgraded. Then Horus adds three extra spins. Those three spins are not being added to the original reel state. They are being played after the upgrades have already happened.

That is why the combination of Horus Wild, symbol upgrade and extra spin is much more important than any one of those features considered alone.

Still, do not turn that into a prediction. An upgraded feature can still produce a poor run. More opportunity is not the same thing as a guaranteed payout.

2 Horus +3 spins
3 Horus +5 spins

These award amounts are documented for widely available versions. Check the paytable of the game you are playing before treating them as universal.

Do Not Chase the Bonus

This one is easy to understand and surprisingly difficult to follow.

You have played 60 spins. No free spins. Then 20 more. Still nothing. Now it starts to feel as though the bonus must be close.

It is not.

The game does not owe you the feature because you have gone a long time without seeing it.

Suppose the previous spin showed two Scatters. The third nearly appeared. That does not make the next spin more likely to trigger the bonus.

Suppose you have played for half an hour without seeing three Scatters. That does not mean increasing the bet is suddenly a clever move. The next result is not trying to correct what happened earlier.

If you decide that €0.50 is your normal spin, keep it there because €0.50 fits your budget. Do not suddenly move to €2 because:

“The bonus has to come soon.”

That is one of the quickest ways to turn a normal session into an expensive one.

A run of spins proves nothing

Check Which Eye of Horus Version You Are Playing

There is more than one Eye of Horus game. There are different releases, different online implementations and later titles carrying the Eye of Horus name.

Even sources describing versions of the original-style game report different RTP figures and somewhat different free-spin structures. One lists a 94.83% RTP for a Reel Time Gaming version, while another lists 96.31% for a Blueprint-distributed version.

That is a large enough difference that you should not simply search for “Eye of Horus RTP” and assume the first number applies to the game in front of you.

Open the game’s information screen and check the provider, RTP, paytable, paylines, minimum and maximum stake, free spins rules, Wild behaviour, and the maximum win if one is stated.

The exact game rules shown inside your version matter more than a number copied from another Eye of Horus page.

The same applies to our site. Whenever we give an RTP or feature specification, it should be tied clearly to the version being discussed.

Do Not Confuse a Feature With an Advantage

Eye of Horus has a clever bonus round. That does not mean the player gains an advantage over the casino when the bonus starts.

Symbol upgrades are good. Expanding Wilds are good. Extra free spins are good. All of them are already included in the mathematics of the game.

The advertised RTP includes the ordinary spins, the weak spins, the bonus triggers, the upgrades and the large wins.

You cannot look at a feature with upgraded symbols and conclude:

“Now I have the edge.”

The feature may have better short-term potential than a normal base-game spin. That is not the same thing.

This distinction matters because slots are designed to make special features feel special. They should. That is part of the entertainment.

Just remember that the casino did not accidentally forget to include the best part of the game in its calculations.

Judge the Session by the Money, Not the Animations

Eye of Horus can produce plenty of activity. Expanding Wild. Symbol upgrade. Two Scatters. Three Scatters. Extra spin. Several paylines lighting up.

All of that can make a session feel busy. But a busy session is not necessarily a profitable session.

Suppose you begin with €100. During the session you trigger the bonus three times, you see several Wild expansions and you hit plenty of small line wins. At the end you have €72. You lost €28.

The fact that the session contained several good moments does not change that number.

Now consider another session. You start with €100. The game is quiet for twenty minutes. Then one strong bonus takes the balance to €118 and you stop.

That session produced less action. But financially, it finished better.

Neither example predicts what will happen next time. The point is simply to keep track of the actual balance rather than judging the game from how many animations appeared.

If your budget was €100, decide beforehand what you are comfortable spending. If the balance reaches the point where you wanted to stop, stop. Do not turn “I’ll play €50” into “I’ll add another €50 because the feature hasn’t arrived.”

The reels have no idea how much you have already spent.

10 Eye of Horus Rules

The ten tips in short.

Learn how the 10 paylines create wins.

Choose the stake before you start and avoid changing it because of recent results.

Understand how the expanding Horus Wild connects paylines.

Know that the free spins round is different from ordinary spins.

Watch how symbol upgrades change the remaining bonus spins.

Understand why extra spins become valuable when upgrades are already active.

Never increase the stake because you think the bonus is due.

Check the RTP and rules for the exact Eye of Horus version you are playing.

Remember that bonus features are already included in the game’s mathematical return.

Judge the session by the bankroll, not by how much activity appeared on screen.

There is no secret strategy that tells Eye of Horus what symbol to land next. That is not what these tips are for.

They help you understand the game you are playing, avoid the common mistakes around stake size and chasing features, and recognise what is actually happening when Horus starts changing the reels.

The spin itself remains random. Your decisions around it do not have to be.
