Eye of Horus · Wild Symbol

Eye of Horus Wild Symbol

See how the Horus Wild substitutes for symbols, expands across a reel and changes the free spins feature.

Substitutes Expands Multi-line

Horus lands on one position in reel 3.

The Horus Wild is the symbol that gives Eye of Horus most of its personality.

Without it, the game would be a fairly straightforward five-reel slot with Egyptian symbols and fixed paylines. When Horus appears, the screen can change very quickly. One position may become an entire Wild reel. A line that looked broken can suddenly connect. Several paylines can win from the same expanded reel. And during free spins, Horus can be tied to the upgrade system that changes the symbol set for the remainder of the feature.

So rather than treating the Wild as one more symbol on the paytable, this guide follows what happens from the moment it lands.

Anatomy of the Horus Wild

Four things are true about Horus at the same time. Seeing them together is more useful than reading them as separate facts.

HORUS

Wild

Substitutes for ordinary paying symbols where the payline permits it.

Expands

Can fill an entire reel in classic-style versions of the game.

Multi-Line

One expanded reel can sit on several active paylines at once.

Bonus Effect

Can be tied to symbol upgrades during free spins, depending on the version.

Horus Lands on the Reels

Imagine the reels stop with this pattern: reel 1 Ankh, reel 2 Ankh, reel 3 a King, reel 4 Ankh, reel 5 a different symbol.

Without a Wild, the line breaks on reel 3. With Horus landing there instead of the King, it can substitute for the missing Ankh. The line effectively becomes Ankh, Ankh, Ankh, Ankh, a four-symbol win that looked broken a moment earlier.

The player does not choose which symbol Horus represents. The game evaluates the available combination automatically.

Broken line, then connected

K

Line breaks: Ankh, Ankh, King, no win continues past reel 2.

Then the Reel Changes

This is where Eye of Horus becomes more interesting than a slot with an ordinary Wild. In classic-style versions, Horus can expand vertically. One Horus position becomes Wild across the whole reel. Instead of Normal / Horus / Normal, the reel can become Horus / Horus / Horus.

Now the Wild is available to paylines crossing the top row, the middle row, and the bottom row. That one event can affect several parts of the screen at once.

One Symbol Can Rescue Several Lines

Suppose reel 3 becomes fully Wild. One payline reaches it through the top position, another crosses the centre, another uses the bottom. Each line can treat reel 3 as a matching symbol where substitution is permitted.

That means Horus may help produce an Ankh win on one line, a premium-symbol win on another, and a lower-symbol combination on a third, all from the same spin. This is why an expanded Horus can produce a total that looks much larger than the first obvious combination on the screen. Do not assume one Wild means one payout. Follow the highlighted paylines.

Pick a line through the Wild reel

Choose a line to trace it through the Wild reel.

Geometry follows this site’s common 10-line layout. Confirm exact line paths against the paytable inside the version you are playing.

A Better Way to Read a Horus Spin

When Horus appears, do not look at the balance first. Start with the reel containing the Wild. Then look left: which symbols are already connected from reel 1? Next look right: can the Wild continue any of those combinations? Then watch the game highlight the winning lines.

Visually, one Horus becomes three Wild positions. Mathematically, every eligible payline passing through that reel now has a substitute available at its intersection point, which is why the effect can be much larger than simply adding two extra Wild symbols.

Step through one spin

Reel 3 expands to a full Wild reel.

The game checks every active payline that crosses reel 3.

All valid wins from those lines are added together.

Illustrative unit values. No live win amounts exist for this static example, the point is that several lines can be added together, not the size of any single number.

The Wild Has No Simple Fixed Value

A regular symbol has a straightforward paytable row: three pay one amount, four pay another, five pay more. Horus is different, its value depends on what it helps create.

Suppose Horus completes four low symbols: that win may be relatively small. Now suppose the same Wild completes five premium symbols: the payout can be much larger. Same Horus, very different result. The important question is never “what does Horus pay”, it is “what is Horus substituting for on this payline.”

One Horus, three interpretations

On this payline, Horus is substituting for Ankh.

The game evaluates each valid payline automatically. There is no strategy choice such as “use Horus as the Ankh”, once the reels stop, the outcome is already determined.

Horus Is Not the Scatter

Eye of Horus also contains a separate Scatter symbol. The two should not be confused. Horus is primarily the Wild. The Scatter is primarily connected with triggering the free spins feature.

So if the reels show Scatter, Scatter, Horus, that is not automatically three Scatters. The Wild normally substitutes for ordinary paying symbols, not for the feature-trigger symbol. The exact implementation should always be checked in the version being played, but Wild and Scatter usually have separate jobs.

Not normally, unless the exact version treats the Wild as a Scatter. Check before assuming.

Yes, in versions that use this trigger rule for the classic-style game.

The Middle Reels Matter

In many Eye of Horus versions, Horus does not appear freely on every reel. It may be restricted to particular middle reels. If your version only allows Horus on selected reels, those positions become the places where a broken combination can potentially be rescued.

Horus landing on reel 2 leaves reels 3, 4 and 5 available to extend the combination. Horus landing on reel 4 leaves far less room to the right. These positions do not necessarily create the same opportunities, check the information panel rather than assuming the Wild can appear anywhere. The artwork may be nearly identical between two releases; the Wild rules may not be.

Horus in the Base Game vs. During Free Spins

In the normal paid game, the Wild is mainly about creating or extending paylines. You spin, Horus lands, it may expand, the game checks the combinations, the payout is added, then the next paid spin begins with a fresh reel state. One Wild does not make another Wild due.

The Wild becomes more important once free spins begin. Depending on the exact version, Horus can also be involved in symbol upgrades and possibly additional spins. An upgrade or an extra spin is real game state, carried from one free spin to the next. That is the major difference between Horus in the base game and Horus inside the bonus.

The First Horus Upgrade

Imagine free spins begin with the normal hierarchy: the low royals, Lotus, Ankh, Scarab, Anubis, Pharaoh’s Mask and Horus Falcon. Horus lands, and the game performs an upgrade, the lowest active symbol tier is removed or converted into the next one. The paylines have not changed. The symbol mix has.

Another Horus appears later, another upgrade takes place, and the reel environment becomes stronger again. Several Horus appearances in the same bonus can feel much more significant than several unrelated Wilds during ordinary paid spins, because the feature remembers the upgrades for that bonus.

10 · J · Q leave the active hierarchy. K · A become the new lowest tier for the rest of the free spins round in classic versions. Ladder order follows this site’s paytable; confirm the hierarchy in your own version.

Early Horus and Late Horus

Two identical Horus events can have different practical importance depending on when they occur. Horus producing an upgrade with 10 free spins remaining leaves many spins to use it; the same upgrade with 1 free spin remaining still improves the reels but leaves much less time.

Early Horus appearances are exciting, but that does not guarantee a stronger final payout. They simply leave more opportunities for the upgrade to contribute.

10 free spins remaining to use the upgrade.

Upgrade at spin 11 of 12

1 free spin remaining to use the upgrade.

Same upgrade. Different amount of bonus left to use it.

Extra Spins Can Extend the Benefit

If a version awards additional free spins from Horus events, those extra spins are played with any upgrades already active still in place. Suppose two upgrades are already active, four spins remain, Horus lands, and extra spins are awarded. Those extra spins are not being added to the original reel state.

Horus, plus upgrades, plus extra spins, can create the most interesting parts of the feature. None of it creates a guaranteed win.

2 Horus +3 spins

These award amounts are documented for widely available versions. Check the paytable of the game you are playing before treating them as universal.

A Fully Upgraded Bonus Can Still Lose

The screen may look excellent, low symbols gone, premium symbols frequent, Horus has already appeared several times, then the final spins produce very little. Symbol upgrades improve the available combinations; they do not force those combinations into winning positions. The paylines still need to connect.

The opposite can happen too. A disappointing round with few upgrades and small wins, then Horus lands late, expands across a useful reel, several paylines connect, and one spin contributes most of the final bonus payout. An expanding Wild is an opportunity, not a guaranteed payout.

Check What the Wild Did

A session with many expanding Wilds can feel completely different from one where Horus rarely appears, but counting Wild appearances alone does not tell you whether the session was financially good. A better way to judge a Horus spin: did it substitute for a symbol, did it expand, how many paylines used it, did it extend a combination, did it trigger an upgrade. That tells you far more than counting how often the Wild appeared.

The Wild event itself can look the same three times in a row. The surrounding reels create the difference.

Do Not Chase Horus

A long run without the Wild does not make it due. Twenty, forty, eighty spins with barely any Horus, increasing the stake because “it has to land soon” does not improve the next result. Horus may also appear just above or below the visible reel window, making it feel like the game almost gave you the Wild. An almost-Wild has no carry-over value.

If €0.50 was the correct stake for your bankroll before the dry run, the absence of Horus does not turn €2 into a smarter wager. Bet size and Wild frequency are separate issues.

During the Bonus the Feature State Can Continue

Free spins are different from the base game: the outcome of one free spin can legitimately change the feature state. An upgrade can remain active, extra spins can remain on the counter. That is actual game state, not superstition.

“The previous spin upgraded the symbols, so the next free spin uses the upgraded set” is a real rule. “The previous spin lost, so the next one is more likely to win” is not.

Not Real

An Expanding Reel Is More Than Three Wild Symbols

Line: reel 1 Ankh, reel 2 Ankh, reel 3 Horus, reel 4 Ankh, reel 5 Ankh. Horus expands. The line now effectively reads Ankh, Ankh, Wild, Ankh, Ankh, a five-symbol Ankh combination. Then the game checks every other active payline. Perhaps another line also uses the expanded reel, containing premium symbols for a four-symbol premium combination. Both wins can be paid on the same spin.

The number of paylines crossing the reel, the symbols around the Wild, the length of each resulting combination, and the paytable all come together on the same spin.

One spin, three line wins

Illustrative unit values, not live win amounts. The point is several separate line wins adding together from one expanded reel.

Horus and Five-Symbol Wins

Premium, premium, a different symbol, premium, premium, without the Wild the line breaks; with it, the game may treat the result as five matching premium symbols. The jump from a four-symbol premium payout to a five-symbol payout can be substantial.

Four Falcons, then five

A Scarab on reel 3 breaks the run. No five-symbol combination forms.

The Horus Rules Worth Remembering

What Horus Cannot Do

  • Make disconnected symbols into a valid line if the required positions do not connect.
  • Replace the Scatter symbol in versions where they have separate jobs.
  • Let the player choose which payout they want.
  • Guarantee a win when it expands, or a good bonus after an upgrade.
  • Make another Wild more likely to appear on the next spin.
